Unison

By Panic.

Setup and Configuration

  1. Unison is available from Panic. It costs US $24.95, but has a free trial period.
  2. Install Unison by dragging the application to wherever you want to keep it (ie. your Applications folder).
  3. Launch Unison.
  4. If this is the first time you have run Unison, the application will walk you through the setup process.
    1. A window will appear offering a choice between "Get Usenet Access" and "Configure your Access". Choose Configure.
    2. When it says Enter your Usenet (NTTP) server address enter news.supernews.com.
    3. After you enter the address Unison will verify that it is valid.
    4. The User Name and Password fields will now become available. Enter your SuperNews username and password. Remember that these are case-sensitive.
    5. Click OK. Unison will try to log into the server to verify the username and password. If it is incorrect an error will appear. Otherwise, it will grab the list of newsgroups from the server. This may take some time, depending on the speed of your connection.
  5. If you have already used Unison with another Usenet server, you can add Supernews to the configuration.
    1. From the Unison application menu, choose Servers -> Edit Servers. This is also available from Preferences by choosing Servers from the toolbar and clicking Edit Servers.
    2. Click the + ("plus") button to add a new server.
    3. For Description enter "SuperNews", or some other descriptive name for display.
    4. Enter the Server Address: news.supernews.com.
    5. Port 119 will already be filled in. Leave it there.
    6. Enter your SuperNews User Name and Password. Remember that these are case-sensitive.
    7. Click OK. Unison will connect to the server to verify that the login information is correct. An error will be displayed if it is wrong.
    8. Unison will download the list of newsgroups from the server. This may take some time, depending on the speed of your connection.
    9. If the Groups window is not visible you can get to it from the Window menu.
  6. The Groups window will have some pre-filled Favorites to get you started. You can remove these, replace them, etc., in the usual manner.
